Located just across the River Mersey from Liverpool, Birkenhead is an attractive town in its own right, offering visitors plenty to explore. From parks and landmarks to museums and galleries, a trip to this charming town makes a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of the city. Here are the top things to do in Birkenhead in 2019.
Lady Lever Art Gallery
This beautiful gallery houses one of the UK’s best collections of fine art. The Pre-Raphaelite collection is one of the finest in the world, and there are impressive displays of Chinese and classical artefacts, as well as some fabulous examples of Wedgewood jasperware.
Birkenhead Park
Designed by Sir Joseph Paxton and opened in 1847, Birkenhead Park is a Grade I-listed landscape and a great place for the whole family to run off some energy. There’s lots to do, with an adventure playground, football pitches, tennis courts, bowling greens and two large fishing lakes ensuring all tastes are catered to.
Birkenhead Priory
With 850 years of history behind it, Birkenhead Priory is the oldest standing building on Merseyside and offers a unique insight into the town and its heritage. Kids can play dress up or complete grave rubbings, and the late-Georgian church tower provides spectacular views across the River Mersey.
Tam O’Shanter Urban Farm
Kids of all ages will enjoy meeting the animals at this lovely farm, which has chickens, goats, pigs and even alpaca. For £1 you can purchase some food and feed the animals, and there’s a café on site serving refreshments.
