Ford Fiesta Through the Years & Why It's Still a UK Favourite

The Ford Fiesta has been a familiar fixture on UK roads for decades, more than earning a reputation as a reliable, affordable, flexible hot hatch that appeals to a wide range of motorists. Very few cars have the kind of widespread appeal to make a bigger impact on the automotive world as the Ford Fiesta. From its birth in 1976 to retirement in 2023, the Ford Fiesta was favoured by everyone, from professional rally car drivers to urban commuters, young adult first-time drivers to budget-conscious buyers.

The Ford Fiesta through the years, had seven iterations. Each as distinct as the last, leaving an unforgettable mark on the automotive landscape. Generation after generation of motorists experienced this versatile, economical, and compact hatchback. Fathers often recall the freedom their first Fiesta gave them, sharing countless stories before proudly parking another Fiesta on the driveway, a well-earned reward for their son’s new L-plates.

Let’s have a look at why the iconic Ford Fiesta has proven so popular in the UK for generation after generation, examining each model starting with the Ford Fiesta Mk1, in an attempt to answer the question, why is the Ford Fiesta so popular in the UK?

Ford Fiesta Mk1

Mk1 Ford Fiesta (1976 to 1983)

Originally named the ‘Bobcat’ project, what would become the iconic Ford Fiesta caused quite a stir leading up to launch in July 1976. Launched in two models, as a 3-door hatchback and also a panel van, the Ford Fiesta was produced in factories across Europe, including Ford’s famed plant in Dagenham, UK.

The Fiesta’s low price and cheap running costs made it an instant hit, proving to be the spark of life that the fledgling supermini sector needed to ignite global consumer interest.

By the end of its production cycle, the Mk1 had sold over million units, with the L Model being as popular with conservative drivers as the XR2 was sought-after by anyone that wanted a little extra power behind the wheel.

Ford Fiesta Mk2

Mk2 Ford Fiesta (1983 to 1989)

The success of the first-generation Fiesta saw Ford, arguably, the world’s most recognisable automotive pioneer, greenlight an updated Fiesta in 1983 - the Mk2. The Mk2 represented an evolution of the Fiesta, with a more modern exterior featuring wraparound headlights, updated interior, petrol, and diesel engines and, for the first time, 5-speed manual transmission.

The mid to late 80’s saw fierce competition in the supermini sector, with a range of European automotive brands vying for consumer supremacy. In 1983, French brand, Peugeot launched the 205, swiftly followed by the second-generation Renault 5 in 1984 which, like the Ford Fiesta, featured a modern facelift. UK brand, British Leyland (commonly known as Austin), was also producing the Austin Metro, a car that proved popular with UK consumers.

Yet, despite automotive brands flooding the market with hot hatches, the Mk2 held its ground proving to be a big hit. The first Ford with a traverse engine layout, today the MK2 is widely credited as being the brand’s first globally successful front wheel drive model.

As the decade drew to a close, sales figures exceeded 4.5 million and today the Mk2 has persisted as highly sought after collector’s cars.

Ford Fiesta Mk3

Mk3 Ford Fiesta (1989 to 1997)

As we accelerated into the 90’s, the Ford fiesta through the years continued to evolve, taking a more radical approach to styling, dramatically updating the appearance of the Fiesta to reflect modern design trends. The fresh look Fiesta was sleeker, with a more rounded aerodynamic shape, smaller grill and flush-mounted headlights and bumpers. Also, for the first time, the Ford Fiesta was available as a 5-door hatchback.

Powering the Mk3 was a range of High Compression Swirl engines alongside Ford’s CVH engine. 1991 saw the introduction of the fuel injection engines in the UK and within the first two-years, more than two million Fiesta’s had been purchased in the UK.

The Mk3’s legacy endures today, with the most desirable models being the XR2i and the performance-oriented RS Turbo which features RS alloy wheels, RS bonnet louvres and distinctive green stripe mouldings.

Ford Fiesta Mk4

Mk4 Ford Fiesta (1995 to 2002)

Our journey continues into the 1990s, a transitional, transformative time in history that sparked a technological revolution, distinctive culture, and bold, expressive style, synonymous with the decade.

The Mk4 range featured new Zetec SE engines which notably improved performance, with the flagship Fiesta Zetec S being sportier and equipped with an improved handling package. In 1999, the Mk4 was given a facelift to align with Ford’s ‘New Edge’ styling language.

New design elements included side airbags, and a newly re-introduced leather interior option. Later evolutions saw the Zetec S and Fiesta’s luxury brand, the Ghia, receive a new engine and freestyle rims, with the diversity popular amongst Fiesta fans.

Mk5 Ford Fiesta (2002 to 2008)

Once we entered a new Millennium, Ford launched an all-new, 5th Generation model, one that represented a nod to previous models of the Ford Fiesta through the years, while reflecting a contemporary ethos and styling.

Fitted with previous generation engines (1.0 litre petrol and 2.0 diesel options), the Mk5 was also the first Fiesta to feature the, now famous, ST performance, which produced an impressive 150bhp. Additional technology included Bluetooth, MP3, automatic headlights and power-fold door mirrors, giving the Fiesta a more premium feel.

The first Fiesta to be sold with anti-lock brakes and passenger airbags as standard, the Mk5 quickly made its mark on the car’s legacy, and, today, is considered the best-selling iterations to-date, with global sales reaching approximately five million.

Ford Fiesta Mk6

Mk6 Ford Fiesta (2008 to 2016)

The global financial crisis, high fuel prices and government eco-centric incentives to reduce emissions all contributed to a surge in hot hatch desirability amongst consumers. It was in this climate that Ford introduced the Mk6 to market.

Launched under the Ford One strategy, to deliver better products worldwide, create a global vehicle line-up and streamline engineering and manufacturing to improve efficiency, the Mk6 Ford Fiesta reflected the same aesthetics and performance, while maintaining the style and flair of the range, while introducing Ford’s ‘Verve Concept’ reflecting increased consumer demand for smaller, efficient cars with style and flair.

Midway through its lifespan, the Mk6 design was refreshed. Sharper sleeker design aesthetics were complemented by the award-winning 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine which produced 180 bhp as standard.

Over the course of its lifespan, the Mk6 consistently ranked as a leader in its class and by the end of its production run, Ford had comfortably shifted more than 3 million units, answering the question, why is the Ford Fiesta is so popular in the UK with an answer of because of its appeal to a wide range of motorists, while simultaneously reflecting contemporary styling, technology and design, all in a competitive package.

Ford Fiesta Mk7

Mk7 (Mk8 in the UK) Ford Fiesta (2016 to 2023)

To the sadness of many motorists, the enduringly popular Ford Fiesta was discontinued in 2023. However, Ford made sure that the hot hatch went out with a bang, introducing Active and Vignale models.

Active Ford Fiesta’s featured roofing bars and SUV-inspired styling, catering to the increasingly expansive SUV market. Vignale models offered luxury features, like a unique grill design with chrome surrounds, chrome or gloss black accented exterior trim, the option of Nappa leather interior, heated front seats and a cutting-edge infotainment system.

It’s mature refined exterior styling, class-leading driving dynamics (motoring journalists described the Mk7 as “the most fun-to-drive supermini”), and modern technology, including adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking (AEB), not too mention being more spacious that many of its rivals, all contributed to the Mk7/Mk8 being very popular with consumers, with an estimated 5 million sold.

Ford Puma 2025

The Ford Puma: The Fiesta’s Successor

Despite being discontinued in 2023, the Fiesta’s legacy lives on in its spiritual successor: the Puma. Fun-to-drive, compact and practical, yet modern and versatile, meeting the demands of the contemporary consumer trend towards SUVs.

Focusing on production of the Puma has allowed Ford to meet the evolving consumer preferences, while acknowledging the DNA of the Ford Fiesta through the years.

Indeed, the Puma shares many of the same engineering foundations as the Fiesta, including EcoBoost engines and a range of powertrain options, while adapting it to what the consumers of today want.
