There are four types of electric vehicle, all of which can be found in the Ford line-up. Mild hybrid and self-charging hybrid cars are the easiest way for customers to discover electrified driving. Both these types of vehicle have a small battery pack and motor that provide support to the combustion engine. They don’t need to be plugged in to charge up, and offer a power boost during acceleration alongside lower emissions. Self-charging Ford hybrid cars can only travel a few miles on electric power alone, while mild hybrids do not have the capability to run without the combustion engine.
Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) represent a greater shift from traditional motoring. Both require you to plug them in to recharge the battery, with EVs completely disposing of a combustion engine. PHEVs typically have a petrol engine as well as an electric motor, which offers around 30-40 miles of zero-emissions range. EVs can travel up to 300-400 miles on a single charge, and of course, emit no CO2 at all.
