Who makes Chery cars and where are they made?

Chery cars are developed and manufactured by Chery Group, an automotive company founded in China in 1997.

Although the Chery name is relatively new to many UK drivers, the manufacturer has an established international presence. Chery now operates across more than 100 countries and regions, with a global customer base of more than 17 million.

The models available in Britain form part of Chery’s dedicated UK range and are supported by a growing network of authorised retailers and service centres, including GroupM53 Chery Wirral in Birkenhead.

How long has Chery been making cars, and when did it arrive in the UK?

Chery has been manufacturing vehicles since 1997 and has sold cars internationally for more than two decades.

The brand arrived in the UK in summer 2025, launching with the TIGGO 7 and TIGGO 8.

Today, you can explore the latest Chery models at GroupM53 Chery Wirral on Green Lane in Birkenhead, where our team can help with current offers, test drives and choosing the right model.

Is Chery a good and reliable car brand?

Chery is an established global car manufacturer with more than two decades of experience building vehicles for drivers around the world.

Although the brand is still relatively new to the UK, its current TIGGO range combines modern technology, strong levels of standard equipment and reassuring manufacturer support. Every new Chery also comes with a 7-year or 100,000-mile warranty, giving buyers added confidence as the brand continues to grow in Britain.

As with any car, regular servicing and maintenance will play an important part in long-term reliability. At GroupM53 Chery Wirral, our team can support you with authorised servicing, genuine parts and ongoing aftersales care from our Birkenhead dealership.

Why are Chery cars more affordable than some competitors?

Chery is focused on giving drivers plenty of car for their money. Across the TIGGO range, you’ll find generous equipment, technology and practical SUV functionality and space at prices that are tough to beat.

Chery’s aim is to offer strong value from the start, so features that may cost extra elsewhere are often included as standard.

The right car still needs to work for your budget beyond the purchase price, so don’t forget to think about finance, insurance, fuel or charging costs and servicing as part of your overall car buying decision.

Are Chery, OMODA and JAECOO the same company?

Chery, OMODA and JAECOO are part of the same wider automotive group, but they are separate car brands with their own models and styles.

Chery’s TIGGO range is built around practical, well-equipped SUVs, while OMODA has a more design-led feel and JAECOO takes a more premium, rugged approach. The brands share the same wider family, but each offers a different type of driving experience.

GroupM53 represents all three, so you can explore and compare the ranges through our dealerships in Birkenhead and Ellesmere Port.

Which Chery models are available in the UK?

Chery’s UK range currently includes four TIGGO SUVs, with petrol and hybrid choices available across selected models.

  • Chery TIGGO 7: a spacious five-seat family SUV, available with petrol or Super Hybrid power.
  • Chery TIGGO 8: a larger seven-seat SUV offering extra room for passengers and family life, with petrol and Super Hybrid options.
  • Chery TIGGO 9: the largest and most premium model in the range, with seven seats and plenty of space for longer journeys.

What is the Chery Super Hybrid system?

Chery Super Hybrid combines a petrol engine, electric motor and battery to deliver smoother, quieter and more efficient everyday driving.

The system can use electric power where it is most effective, with the petrol engine providing extra support for longer journeys or when more performance is needed. It also recovers energy while you slow down or brake, helping to recharge the battery as you drive.

Depending on the model, Chery Super Hybrid may operate as a full hybrid or a plug-in hybrid, so charging requirements and electric range can vary. The overall aim is the same: to reduce fuel use while retaining the flexibility and reassurance of petrol power.

Are Chery cars safe?

Chery places a strong focus on both the physical strength of its cars and the technology designed to help prevent accidents. Across its wider range, Chery combines a strong body structure with a wide range of driver-assistance features designed to help protect passengers and support you on the road.

Depending on the model and trim, safety technology can include Autonomous Emergency Braking, lane support, driver monitoring, speed assistance, child-presence detection and an emergency eCall system. Selected TIGGO models also offer features such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Door Open Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

Independent Euro NCAP testing also provides useful reassurance. The Chery TIGGO 7 and TIGGO 8 have achieved five-star ratings, while the TIGGO 4 received four stars.

The exact number of airbags, assistance systems and safety rating varies across the range, so check the specification of the particular Chery model and trim you are considering.

What warranty comes with a new Chery?

Every new Chery sold in the UK currently comes with a Chery Manufacturer Warranty lasting seven years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The high-voltage battery fitted to applicable Super Hybrid models receives separate cover lasting eight years or 100,000 miles. The remaining warranty can also transfer to a later owner, which may help support the vehicle’s future resale appeal.

Warranty cover is subject to the manufacturer’s conditions, exclusions and servicing requirements. Certain components, types of use and wear-related items may have different limits, so the complete policy should be reviewed rather than assuming every part is covered for the full seven years.

What can you do with the Chery app, and is it available in the UK?

Yes, the Chery app is available in the UK for compatible models.

Depending on the model and its connected-services specification, the app can allow owners to:

  • Check battery charge, range and vehicle status.
  • View the cabin temperature.
  • Pre-condition the car.
  • Monitor tyre pressures.
  • Find the vehicle’s location.
  • Locate nearby public chargers.
  • Schedule charging and departure times.
  • Remotely activate selected vehicle functions.

Available features can vary by model and trim, so it is worth checking what is included with the Chery you are considering.

Motability - Frequently Asked Questions

Considering a Chery through the Motability Scheme? Find out which models are available, what your lease includes and how to choose the best car for you.

What cars can you get on Mobility?

At GroupM53 Chery Wirral, selected TIGGO 7 and TIGGO 8 models are currently available through the Motability Scheme, with petrol and Super Hybrid choices across the range.

The five-seat TIGGO 7 offers generous passenger and boot space for everyday journeys, while the seven-seat TIGGO 8 provides added flexibility for larger families, mobility equipment or extra passengers.

Models, trims and Advance Payments can change, so check our latest Chery Motability offers or speak to our team for current availability.

What is Motability?

The Motability Schemeallows you to exchange your qualifying mobility allowance for a lease on a brand-new car, including selected Chery models.

Your lease includes insurance, servicing and maintenance, breakdown cover and tyre and windscreen support. You can also add up to three approved drivers, which can be helpful when a family member or carer drives on your behalf.

An Advance Payment may be needed for some vehicles, depending on the Chery model and trim you choose. Fuel or charging costs are not included.

Who qualifies for Motability?

You may qualify for the Motability Scheme if you receive an eligible mobility allowance and have at least 12 months remaining on your award.

Qualifying allowances currently include:

  • Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment.
  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance.
  • Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Adult Disability Payment in Scotland.
  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Child Disability Payment in Scotland.
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement.
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment.

You do not need to drive yourself. A parent, family member or carer can be added as an approved driver, provided the car is used for the benefit of the eligible customer.

How many miles can I do in a Motability car?

A standard three-year Motability car lease currently includes an allowance of 60,000 miles, equivalent to an average of 20,000 miles per year.

You do not have to divide your mileage evenly between each year, but additional charges may apply if the vehicle exceeds the total allowance by the end of the lease.

Consider your regular appointments, family journeys and longer trips when deciding whether a Chery TIGGO 7 or TIGGO 8 is right for you.

Can you have two Motability cars?

Each eligible Motability customer can lease one Scheme vehicle at a time.

Two people living in the same household can each have their own Motability car, provided they both receive a qualifying mobility allowance and meet the Scheme’s eligibility requirements. One individual customer cannot have two Scheme cars.

You can also add up to three approved drivers to one Motability car, so different family members or carers may be able to share the driving without needing a second vehicle.

What are the best Motability cars?

The best Motability car is the one that makes everyday travel easier for you, your passengers and anyone who drives on your behalf.

Within the Chery range:

  • The TIGGO 7 may suit customers looking for a comfortable five-seat SUV with good passenger and luggage space.
  • The TIGGO 8 offers seven seats and additional flexibility for larger families, mobility equipment or regular journeys with extra passengers.
  • Petrol and Super Hybrid choices allow you to consider how you drive, where you can charge and the type of journeys you make.

Before ordering, we recommend testing the seating position, door access and boot space with any wheelchair or mobility equipment you regularly carry.
